Pictured Rocks Area

Help us continue to share these treasures

The Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Hiawatha National Forest abide by the Leave No Trace guidelines. The park’s sandstone features are extremely vulnerable to people walking or climbing on them. Visitors are reminded to adhere to closure signs and barricades so these phenomenal structures don’t collapse or erode.

Pets are allowed in a select few areas of the park; do your homework by checking the Pictured Rocks website and make sure your dog is kept on a leash in permitted areas. The PRNL prohibits pets in the backcountry because they could become lost or injured by porcupines or other wildlife; intimidate other visitors; harass, injure, or kill wildlife; and disturb other hikers or campers.

Home of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Hiawatha National Forest, Grand Island National Recreational Area, and Alger Underwater Preserve, the greater Munising area is gorgeous and full of activities year-round.

If you’re visiting in late spring, summer, or fall, take a Pictured Rocks Cruises tour to view the majestic cliffs and rock formations of the national lakeshore. Or be in control of your own boat and paddle along the cliffs and through sea caves on a guided kayak tour. Highway 58 is the scenic route that runs throughout the Pictured Rocks Park, connecting Munising and Grand Marais. Access Miners Castle and Beach, Chapel and Beaver Basins, Au Sable Light Station, and Grand Sand Dunes along this windy thoroughfare. This drive is especially beautiful in the fall when bright shades of reds, yellows, and oranges adorn the trees.

Grand Island

Interested in exploring secluded island full of history? Climb aboard a Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tour and see the graveyard of historic vessels in Lake Superior while cruising around gorgeous Grand Island, or wine and dine with Grand Island Cruises by taking their lunch or dinner tour. Looking for something a little faster? Tour the island on a jet boat with Riptide Ride.

Hundreds of Miles of Scenic Trails, Over 14 Spectacular Waterfalls, and Beaches Galore

Be sure to grab a comfortable pair of shoes and explore hundreds of miles of gorgeous hiking and biking trails in the national lakeshore and forest. The Munising area also has over 15 lush waterfalls, ranging from trickling into a stream to cascading flows falling over cliffs, and historic lighthouses great to photographing.

Looking to unwind on a sandy beach or swim in the big lake? The Miners, Sand Point, and Au Train areas have some of the best beaches you’ll find. If you want to do something a little more adventurous, fish, canoe, kayak and enjoy our various inland lakes and rivers.

Winter Activities & U.P. Culture

In the winter, you can snowmobile miles of our well-groomed trail system or try out the excellent ski, snowshoe, and winter bike trails. For thrill seekers, visit the Eben Ice Caves and the Pictured Rocks ice curtains near Sand Point, or better yet – book an ice climbing class!

You’ll also want to delve into Munising’s arts and culture scene by checking out the vast outdoor displays throughout town and by visiting museums and information centers. While dining out, be sure to try fresh Lake Superior whitefish and a pasty, two delicacies of the Upper Peninsula.
