Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Grand Sable Dunes
Grand indeed, the salmon-colored dunes offer sweeping vistas of Lake Superior and are one of the Eastern U.P.'s treasures. As such, their fragile habitat is federally protected.
From the west end of the Sable Falls parking lot, a 1/2 mile trail leads across Sable Creek to the edge of the Grand Sable Dunes these beautiful salmon-colored dunes tower 300 feet above Lake Superior and offer spectacular vistas across the lake. The dunes themselves sit atop sand banks that have been eroded by fluctuating great lake levels over the centuries. Prevailing northwesterly winds have piled up the sand over the past 6,000 years to form the elliptically shaped dunes.
