Soo Locks Engineers Day

SAULT STE. MARIE - A Michigan landmark will open its doors to the public, when the Soo Locks hosts its annual open house Soo Locks Engineers Day on Friday June 28, 2013. The day celebrates the engineers who built the Soo Locks along with the men and women of the past and present who maintain the Locks.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invite people of all ages to come explore the Soo Locks and avail themselves the rare opportunity to walk across the Lock walls. These walls make it possible for freighters to traverse the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. To gain a real understanding of how this engineering marvel works only a visit will do.

The Great Tugboat Parade

Location: Soo Locks West Portage Ave. Sault Ste. Marie, MI
The Great Tugboat Parade is an entourage of festively decorated tugboats having fun as they make their way through the Soo Locks. The Parade will take place on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. and can be seen from both the American and Canadian side of the St. Mary's River.
The Great Tugboat Race will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at Noon-2pm. The best place to view the race is from Aune-Osborn Park located on Riverside Drive.
The Great Tugboat Race proceeds help assist people who cannot help themselves because of a disability. Our main objective is helping local challenged children and it is something that we have done since 1982.

Sault Arts, Crafts and Family Fun Fair

The Sault Arts, Crafts and Family Fun Fair will sprawl across the City Hall lawn overlooking historic Water Street and the St. Mary’s River. Come parooz the wears of local artisans and crafters also take part in the family activities. Wander the three blocks to the Soo Locks and experience walking across the tops of the Locks walls and exploring the historic buildings. Don’t forget that the Cloverland Electric Cooperative Hydroelectric Plant Open House takes place the same time.

International Bridge Walk

Young and old, physically fit or fitness challenged, all enjoy the fantastic views and the resultant pictures that will last a lifetime. Best of all, there’s no admission fee, no long waits, and no sweltering heat to contend with, since the walk steps off at 9am sharp. Please see attached file for a map of the LSSU Norris Center.
Sponsored by the International Bridge Authority and the Chamber of Commerce from both cities, organizers remind walkers to bring a passport or other approved I.D. found at the Soo Area Info, International Bridge Customs section of this site. Bus transportation is available to bring walkers from Ontario back to the starting point for a small fee of $2.Visitors will find plenty to do back on the Michigan side, with a full offering of museums, boat tours, beaches, parks and more open to the public. Celebrate your independence in the Les Cheneaux Islands, with our two-day traditional celebration, featuring a parade through downtown Cedarville with more than 100 entries, kids games, food, a Makers Market with arts and crafts and the most gorgeous fireworks display reflected off the waters of Cedarville Bay on July 4. The Makers Market continues on Friday, July 5. Stick around for Muck Runs for trucks and ATVs at Taylor's Pit on Saturday, July 6.

Rendezvous in the Sault

Location: Water Street Sault Ste. Marie, MI
Rendezvous in the Sault is a living history event that will take place along Historic Water Street at the City Hall Grounds and at the Historic Homes. Local and visiting historical re-enactors will set up camps and displays with presentations and demonstrations on military and civilian life in the period of 1668-1840. Food, music, dancing, canon firing, storytelling, crafts and games will be just some of the fun things to see and do on Saturday and Sunday of the last full weekend of July.
Rendezvous in the Sault will be an annual event and is being presented by the Chippewa County Historical Society in cooperation with the City of Sault Ste. Marie. Planning and authenticity of encampments will be under the direction of the French Colonial Heritage Society of Port Huron, Michigan. The Fireman's Ball

36th Les Cheneaux Antique Wooden Boat Show

Location: Les Cheneaux Island
Live music plays in Hessel harbor, while visitors have the rare opportunity to see 150 wooden vessels of all shapes and sizes, representing the pre-Fiberglas era of boat building. See wooden dinghies, rowboats, canoes, sailboats, runabouts, cruisers and other vintage wooden vessels. By popular request, a new Classic Glass category has been introduced to bring a few of the area's outstanding classic Fiberglas boats into the show. Browse the many food and nautical vendors stationed alongside the show, at one of Michigan's most picturesque settings. The Hessel Marina affords a view of the harbor and a handful of islands. Spectators can also board a tour boat that lets you get a little closer to the area's 36 Les Cheneaux Islands on Lake Huron, with two trips leaving from Hessel pier throughout the day. The Les Cheneaux Festival of Arts is also on the waterfront, next to the boat show, where nearly 70 exhibitors sell their juried arts and crafts. All proceeds generated by the show support the operations of the Les Cheneaux Historical Association's two museums and activities throughout the year. Vote on your favorite boat for the People's Choice award. Boat Show awards are given out at 4 pm.
